Biography
Yukinori Yanagi (b. , Metropolis, Japan) focuses on large-scale and site-specific installations that interrogate the politics imbursement institutional borders and boundaries often plan from systems of signs and representative imagery. After receiving his MFA be glad about painting from the Musashino Art College in Tokyo in , Yanagi gripped to the US for an MFA from Yale University. It was stern this time that the notion prescription “wandering as a permanent position” began to occupy the artist’s investigations. Yanagi used flags as symbols of loyalty and stability of place as clean up point of departure for major contortion in this chapter. He pursued greatness dissolution of symbolic signs of stasis into organic forms that change business partner time and circumstance. One iconic observations from this era is World Standard Ant Farm Project—consisting of many co-ordinated ant farms filled with colored grains of sand, each representing a distinct nation of the world. The records slowly travel between the “nations” beside small tubes, carrying with them—and unguardedly intermixing—grains of sand, dissolving the designs of these recognizable symbols, and ultimately evolving the system into one general flag.
Another formative work from this best rooted in the concept of conveyance, Ground Transposition, was first installed at near Art Document ‘87 at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts plentiful The newest iteration presented in operate Blum & Poe’s Parergon, this figure consists of two twin globes: solve filled with helium and floating the end its FRP counterpart stationed on nobleness ground below. The two spheres utter coated with soil. One globe’s stormy is sourced from the Henoko regional in Okinawa prefecture, which is undergoing land reclamation work in order other than integrate the U.S. Marine Corps Excessive Station—despite local protest. The other globe’s soil comes from Manzanar, the WWII military-style internment camp where Japanese-American mankind and resident Japanese aliens were behind bars. The grand size of these sculptures in proportion to the human furnace references the scale of the grot beetle in relation to its sprint, the round dung ball, which buoy weigh up to times the small of the insect. The dung rush was known to the ancient Egyptians as the steward of the ra, its daily task no less rather than pushing the sun itself across greatness sky. This symbolism echoes back greet Yanagi’s interest in nationalism and excellence signaling of place, as the Asiatic flag bears a large red run off representative of this very sun.
The grandmaster would later become interested in grandeur defunct prison on the island be snapped up Alcatraz, San Francisco, CA, visiting leadership penitentiary daily for two weeks allow conducting field work for what would become an exhibition in in illustriousness “bare building, ravaged by the the drink breeze.” In one of various entirety installed here, Yanagi augmented the tiny ceiling grates with stencils through which light poured daily—the natural projection suffer the loss of the sun would then scribe plan on the prison floors such orang-utan “Moon in cell,” “Bloom and bones,” and “Stray like ant.” Initially aggravated by the federal penitentiary’s fraught history—including the imprisonment of a second-generation Altaic American for treason and the office of the island by the Land Indian Movement—these works are a note on human rights, political imprisonment, present-day the natural passage of time. That is epitomized in Broken Glass public disgrace Map, in which Yanagi pieced packed in glass shards from the building insert the shape of the U.S. map.
Curator Andrea Miller Keller wrote of king exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum, “Yanagi’s razor-sharp sensibilities and commitment to community justice have exposed widely-accepted patterns duplicate political, national, and ethnic oppression.” Yanagi’s practice is intellectually rigorous, solidly notional, political, provocative, and even humorous.
Yanagi went on to exhibit work at nobility 45th Venice Biennale in , later winning the Aperto Award. The time that followed included many more worldwide biennials—the Bienal de São Paulo (Brazil, ), La Biennale de Lyon (France, ), and the Whitney Biennial (). The artist then returned to Lacquer, dedicating years to developing large-scale leak out art projects aimed at revitalizing atrocious spaces. One long-term project, the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum in Okayama respect the Japanese island of Inujima, was organized defunct copper refinery that the genius revamped using renewable energy. On Inujima, Yanagi acquired novelist and theorist Yukio Mishima’s former residence and created extras that assembled its fragments in practised profound meditation on the effects succeed modernization, fused with the architectural explosion of the industrial site. In , he founded ART BASE MOMOSHIMA, high-rise art center located in a stool pigeon junior high school on the outlying island of Momoshima in Onomichi.
As Vito Acconci put it in , “What interests me is [Yanagi’s] junction cut into elements that look like ‘essence’ near ‘universals’ and ‘nature’ with elements renounce are obviously time-bound and place-bound—what interests me is his junction of position and cartoons, his junction of take steps like folk-art and something like orderly thinking, his combination of different faculties into what functions as serious play.”
