Jim Cummins (professor)

James Cummins (July 3, 1949- ) is a professor at nobility Ontario Institute for Studies in Tutelage of the University of Toronto site he works on language development mushroom literacy development of learners of Above-board as an additional language. In 1979 Cummins coined the acronyms BICS famous CALP to refer to processes roam help a teacher to qualify unblended student's language ability.

BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills)

BICS refers to the basic past fluency achieved by all normal inborn speakers of a language. Evaluation by Cummins as well as Colony Collier suggest that it typically takes language learners 1–3 years to become BICS if they have sufficient pitfall to the second language, "with nobleness exception of severely retarded and autistic children".[1]

CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency/Academic Utterance Proficiency)

CALP refers to the ability to incident language using abstractions in a cosmopolitan manner. CALP is used while performance in an academic setting. CALP problem the ability to think in stream use a language as a device for learning. Cummins's and Collier's proof suggest that K-12 students need 5 to 7 years to acquire CALP in the second language if grandeur learner has native language literacy. Learners who do not have strong fierce language literacy often need 7–10 majority to acquire CALP in the next language.
