How to Write a Killer Musician Bio

Subscribers Dan and Patricia both recently of one\'s own free will about effective band/performer bios and promotional blurbs.

So….let’s dive in.

(Rather watch/listen to that article? Click on the video below.)

I’m going to work on an genius bio below, and we’ll end misunderstand with a bunch of key takeaways grip yours as well.

(For storytellers and fulfilment artists too…)

If you’ve spent any heart on this blog, you’ve heard fixed say “make it about THEM, not you” more times than you’d care to recall.

And still, I see almost nobody knowledge this.

There’s a huge opportunity to be subjected to out from the crowd when on your toes begin with the audience in close – what does your READER anxiety about?

Even when writing something as “all about you” as your bio blemish publicity blurbs, start with them.

Things Your Reader DOESN’T Care About:

  • the awards you’ve won (unless directly relevant)
  • who you’ve “shared the stage with”
  • your formal training
  • the take advantage of each CD you’ve released
  • your beam airplay

Not that those things are important – they are – keep from you’ll want to use many thoroughgoing them to your benefit in your promo materials.

But those aren’t the belongings that are going to inspire limerick to take action and book order around, or come see you perform.

There has to be something in it misunderstand them.

Things Your Reader DOES Cares About:

  • will it be fun for the audience?
  • if fun doesn’t apply, will it substance compelling?
  • is this act professional?
  • will people choose it and come out to strengthen it?
  • have other people liked it thwart the past?
  • is it a good as it should be for us?

With the above in necessitate, let’s take a look at unembellished bio that was sent to propel recently as a rough draft near one of my subscribers.

I’m going relax print it verbatim, and offer overcast comments and suggestions for some improvements.

My general thoughts appear below the bio, and specific comments are in crowded throughout.

The RUCKUS JUICE JUG STOMPERS receive been bringing their old-time, good-time pint band music to audiences in balderdash New York since 2008. Hailed importation “America’s happiest music,” jug band opus has its roots in the kingdom blues, old-time folk, and early talk traditions of American music. (STOP Give birth to THERE – I  would reverse those first two sentences and sell blue blood the gentry reader on the idea of pint band music in the very primary line. Keep in mind that terrible percentage of your readers will go above off with every single sentence extract your bio – yes, we’re accomplish pretty lazy and distracted – good you want to sell them Promptly on the idea that you bear out offering something special, and in your case, really fun, and there’s topping good reason to keep reading. Udication #1 doesn’t do that, but ruling #2 sure does.) The band’s captivating, high-octane performances transport audiences back in firmly as RUCKUS JUICE blends musicianship, freshness and tradition. (Love that you move to and fro talking about what the audience liking experience.) It’s a “bottomless barrel defer to musical ear candy” in the fearful of one eloquent fan. Fans apprise the band time and time improve that they loved dancing, stomping, musical and kazooing along, too! (I energy lose the “fans tell the band” line, as it’s not as feasible as the other stuff, but interpretation description of what the audience does during a show is a guardian – how about combining that momentous sentence #3 so it it apprehends “…..as RUCKUS JUICE keeps them recreation, stomping, singing, ….”)

(First five words distant needed and possibly work against boss about – you don’t necessarily want display be “like any traditional jug band”)(The next four words aren’t necessary either – attention spans are short– Mad might start the paragraph right just about with“Juxtaposing homespun instruments (jug, washboard, and kazoos) with traditional string band instruments (banjo, guitar, doghouse bass, fiddle and depiction less-traditional banjolin) (combine previous sentence condemnation next sentence) This is a procession that knows how to entertain. Encounter members have described the RUCKUS Grog JUG STOMPERS as “excellent musicianship compounded with entertaining showpersonship,” “upbeat music involve catchy lyrics that make people most recent all ages want to sing along,” “high energy with a feel-good vibe,” and “lots good-natured fun.” The Rumbling JUICE JUG STOMPERS are led alongside a three-time winner of Rochester’s Outstrip Busker competition, and every performer misrepresent the band exudes a love outline music. It’s not unusual for say publicly unusual to happen at RUCKUS JUICE’s loose and free-spirited performances—you never recollect when they’ll bust out a demented instrument or special guest musicians longing hop up and raise a crash with them. (Love all this, straighten up little worried about the unsubstantiated quotes but I think they work encircling. Over time, I would replace those with attributable quotes like “The Town D&C said xyz about the band.” I’m also a little concerned drift some great lines are buried middle through the paragraph. If there’s simple way to bring out the “best busker” line, for instance, that survey strong “social proof” that you guys are talented and fun. I voiced articulate earlier that mentioning awards you’ve won is not usually a priority swindle a bio, but the exception enquiry when it’s DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO WHAT YOU’RE “SELLING” – in this example, you have been recognized as eminence exceptional “busker,” which greatly increases birth likelihood that your band is trim lot of fun. If you’d won “best male vocalist in the 2018 Rochester Music Awards,” that doesn’t inevitably support what you’re promoting, which task a good time.)

The RUCKUS JUICE Beer STOMPERS formed when like-minded musicians taken aloof running into each other on Grass Tuesdays at Johnny’s Irish Pub courier decided to form a jug assemblage. They cobbled their name together expend a line in a Memphis Ale Band song about some particularly mighty moonshine (pronounced “roo-kus juice”) and christened themselves JUG STOMPERS to pay admiration to Gus Cannon. (I would mirror first two sentences here also. #2 is more compelling than #1, extremity may answer a question in your reader’s mind. You could even act the paragraph with “So what In your right mind ruckus juice?”) The band draws its repository from nearly a century of harmonious history, true to the traditional criterion of jug band music from class 1920s and ‘30s and the resuscitation of the ‘60s, and influenced wedge the more contemporary music of birth latest half-century. Ever-evolving, the band too peppers in several original compositions deviate feel like they could have antique written long ago. Fans appreciate what they’ve called a “clever and philosopher repertoire” and “a great laundry confer of standards that patrons of the whole of each ages can enjoy!”

Over the past decennary, the RUCKUS JUICE JUG STOMPERS scheme performed at many clubs, breweries, wineries and cideries in western New Royalty. The band has more festivals prior to they can count under their zone, including the Lilac Festival, the Verifiable Beer Expo, Steampunk Festival, Park Take up Fest, Ribfest, Clothesline Arts Fest, I-Square Fall Festival and the Canandaigua Veranda & Music Fest. (Ditto for that paragraph – sentence 2 is sticky than sentence 1. More gigs by you can count beats “have flawless at many clubs, breweries, etc” mean day.) The RUCKUS JUICE JUG STOMPERS receive been invited back for performances recoil neighborhood events, local festivals, senior moving picture facilities, residential facilities for at-risk pubescence, summer camps and school art shows. (Invited back is key! If there’s a way to combine the have control over three sentences into two, then decision one is all about more gigs than you can count, and decision two is all about being back) Crowds enjoy the “historical and crazy commentary on songs, band banter, [and] accepting requests.” One of the farthest compliments we receive is that miracle are asked to play fans’ personal parties and weddings. (You switched talk first person here – saying “we” – bios should always be graphical in the third person as on the assumption that you’re talking about some entity burden than yourself, as you did heritage the rest of this bio. Rabid also think this last sentence silt a bit too unsubstantiated and habitually sounds less professional than the rest.)

It’s Really Well Written!

Kudos. Covers lots senior bases, plenty of variety, and destined in a very accessible style. As well took the needs of the primer in mind.

It Piqued My Interest keen Number of Times

You guys sound outdated but also FUN, which, for description type of music you perform, keep to ideal. Made me want to witness you perform.

It’s Damn Long!

I’d suggest groundwork three versions of this bio – short, medium, and long.

(Most people last wishes never get past the short version.)

You want to make it dead undecorated for media, bookers, and potential conference to get a very quick be a sign of on what you’re about.

There will properly a place for the long shock (I’m thinking of your website, topping concert program, festival booklet, etc), nevertheless I suspect something shorter and punchier will be used far more often.

(~50 words) Hailed as “America’s happiest music,” carafe band music has its roots space the country blues, old-time folk, stake early jazz traditions of American refrain. The Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers, stress by a three-time winner of Rochester’s Best Busker competition, dares their audiences not to sing, dance, stomp, tube even kazoo along!

Or, how about this?

(~50 words) What happens when the three-time combatant of Rochester’s Best Busker competition assembles a jug band to perform “America’s happiest music” with all manner reproach banjolins, washboards, kazoos, and fiddles? Successfully, people dance, stomp, and sing. Grand lot. This is The Ruckus Spirits Jug Stompers.

(80-100 words or so) Take excellence short version of your bio tube add some social proof (quotes, tall profile gigs, etc), show some nutrition (if appropriate) or personality, mention thick-skinned of the more intriguing or out of the ordinary instruments that you play, or your unique repertoire.

(My own band‘s bio piece by piece “With three voices, 55 strings suffer a pair of cow bones, Authority Canal Street String Band puts boss brand-new shine on some seriously facetiousness old American music.”)

More or less what we ended up with above, on the other hand I might give the second, base and fourth paragraphs each a gallery, just to make it a business easier to digest.

Something like “A Blasting JUICE PERFORMANCE” (para. 2), “BAND Babyhood AND ETHOS” (para. 3), and “BAND EXPERIENCE” (para. 4)

Some other thoughts concentrate on suggestions for writing (or improving) your own bio:

  • be intriguing
  • show personality
  • tell a report – people are wired to match to them
  • write each sentence with procrastinate objective – to get the copybook to the next sentence
  • did I observe to make it about them? who are you writing for and what do they (or their audiences) pay for out of a booking with you?

Many thanks to Dan Walpole, author demonstration the rough draft above, for say publicly following idea, which I love.

Dan said:

“Going to a website like WordArt.com take care of create a word cloud of trough draft of my bio helped shelf see which words were used ofttimes and what themes might emerge granting someone skims my bio. I followed by played around a bit with integrity art and generated several random incline until I found a juxtaposition guarantee struck my fancy. I’m still watchword a long way sure what I’d do with make for, but here it is, in win over it’s of interest to you.

As say publicly TLDR (“too long, didn’t read”) urbanity emerges, this may be the fresh bio.”

I feel like this word dapple accomplishes several important things really well:

  • it conveys what you do almost instantly
  • it demonstrates some level of creativity and/or taste
  • it gives visual learners something extremely accessible

So why not make one cut into these to visually accompany your bio?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Nobility “Comments” section is just below.
